My first post on the blog was going to be a joyous, bouncing-lamb and bursting-blooms “Welcome to our New Zealand Spring” affair but, alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
The fourth day into the season of soil-warming and thrusting green shoots, it decided to snow. After basking in 18 degrees we, and all the now not-so-bouncing lambs, were taken by frigid surprise.
That’s nothing new in these parts. The Canterbury Plains can experience some mad weather. In fact, New Zealand as a whole seems to experience several different climes all at once. As I sat here watching snowflakes fall, some residents of the North Island, for instance Kataia, were stripping off in temps of 20 degrees.
Thankfully, not everyone was dismayed at the turn of the temperatures. Local ski resorts such as Mount Hutt and Porter’s Heights are reveling in a huge dump of snow that’s seen their snow base increase to one meter, not bad for the Spring season!
I wonder if the boss would notice if I nipped out to hit the slopes……
